2026 Outback

Introduction

Subaru has unveiled the seventh-generation 2026 Subaru Outback, introducing a more rugged exterior, greater interior comfort, and improved off-road performance. As one of the brand’s most enduring models, the Outback remains a favourite for drivers looking for all-weather capability and long-distance practicality. The redesigned model features the latest generation of Subaru’s safety and driver-assist technologies, revised powertrains, and added space for both passengers and cargo. Final Canadian specifications and pricing will be announced closer to its market arrival in late 2025.

What's New on the 2026 Subaru Outback

2026 Outback Exterior Front

Exterior

The 2026 Outback adopts a sharper, more upright design that reflects its dual identity as both a practical SUV and a trail-capable vehicle. A wider front grille, more angular headlight arrangement, and rugged lower cladding contribute to a stronger visual presence. Subaru has revised the fascia for improved durability and aerodynamic efficiency, while retaining functional design elements such as scratch-resistant surfaces and raised bumper geometry for better clearance.

The vehicle’s side profile remains familiar but has been subtly reworked to emphasize height and structural integrity. A taller roofline and wider rear pillar provide visual and functional enhancements, offering more interior headroom and stability. Roof rails remain standard and are now engineered for a 363-kg static load and 100-kg dynamic load. An industry-first lateral load rating also allows mounting gear such as hammocks or drying lines. At the rear, steeper glass rake, revised light signatures, and a more integrated liftgate layout improve cargo access and aerodynamics.

2026 Outback Interior

Interior

The cabin of the 2026 Outback has been rethought with comfort and practicality in mind. Key dimensional changes, including a taller roof and wider load floor, provide increased space for both passengers and cargo. Subaru has introduced low-fatigue seating designs that are directly mounted to the chassis to reduce head movement and improve support during long drives. Additional adjustments to bolster height and cushion depth provide further ergonomic support. Passenger and cargo space have also improved. Front and rear occupants enjoy greater headroom, and cargo volume has increased to 980 litres with enhancements to both vertical and horizontal space. The load floor now measures 1,100 mm in width, and the cargo opening is wider and taller for easier loading.

Inside the cabin, everyday usability has been improved with larger cupholders, felt-lined bottle holders capable of holding 32-ounce containers, and integrated gear hooks in the cargo area and liftgate. A washable tonneau cover made from recycled materials is standard, designed to separate gear, cover the rear bumper, or partition the cargo area for pets or equipment. Cabin quietness has also been addressed with increased insulation in the roof, doors, and headliner, reducing wind and ambient noise. Interior materials include sustainable components such as headliner inserts made from recycled plastic, and new seat padding and door surfaces improve comfort without compromising durability.

Versions

The 2026 Subaru Outback will be offered in Touring, XT Limited, Wilderness, and XT Premier trims. Each version includes Subaru’s full-time all-wheel drive and updated safety systems, with the XT and Wilderness trims offering higher-output engines and unique off-road tuning. Touring and XT Premier focus more on long-distance comfort and everyday practicality, while the Wilderness emphasizes trail capability and rugged styling. Full Canadian trim specifications and options will be confirmed closer to the vehicle’s official on-sale date.

Powertrain

2026 Outback Engine

The 2026 Subaru Outback offers two powertrain options. A revised 2.5-litre naturally aspirated SUBARU BOXER engine produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, while a 2.4-litre turbocharged BOXER engine—standard on XT trims and Wilderness—generates 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT with an 8-speed manual mode.

2026 Outback Drivetrain/Handling

Symmetrical Full-time All-Wheel Drive remains standard, now tuned for quicker torque response. A revised X-MODE system improves traction management across a wider range of terrain and can be toggled from the steering wheel without taking hands off the wheel. The new Outback retains 220 mm of ground clearance and incorporates improved chassis stiffness and suspension tuning. XT trims and Wilderness models also feature upgraded steering derived from the WRX, using a dual-pinion rack for sharper on-centre feel and better low-speed handling.

Technology and Features

Subaru has introduced a new digital and connected technology suite in the 2026 Outback. A 12.1-inch vertical touchscreen and 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel are now standard. The infotainment system is powered by a new processor for improved responsiveness and incorporates a hybrid cloud/onboard navigation system. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are standard, with user-selectable views and full-screen or split-screen layout options.

The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite has been expanded, now supporting driver-supervised, hands-free highway driving at speeds up to 135 km/h on approved roads. The system uses three forward-facing cameras and added radar sensors to support features such as Emergency Stop Assist, Pre-Curve Speed Control, and Active Lane Change Assist. In situations where the driver becomes unresponsive, Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection can bring the vehicle to a stop and contact emergency services. Other systems include standard lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
